In the Garden hymn, by Charles Austin Miles

Here is the well known In the Garden hymn by Charles Austin Miles. This hymn was written about 1912. Poems, proverbs and quotes have been written about being in the garden.

I don't believe that this one is a vegetable gardening hymn, but it certainly fits with our theme here of celebrating the joy of gardening.

It's a popular Methodist hymn that adds a new dimension to the idea of walking in the garden.

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

I’d stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

I hope you have enjoyed this hymn by Charles Austin Miles. Mr. Miles was trained as a pharmacist, but made a profession of songwriting and publishing. I have no idea whether he enjoyed vegetable gardening, but this hymn suggests he was inspired by his and other gardens. Mr. Miles was born in 1868 and died in 1946.
