Gardening Resources - tools, supplies and references

We all need gardening resources, whether that be tools, equipment, supplies, guidance or what have you. Well, here is resource central for Vegetable Gardening and Greenhouses.

Below I've assembled a list of many providers of products and references that you will find helpful. Many offer discounts when purchasing items on line.

I'll continue to add to this listing as I run across additional resources that I think are of value. The idea is to provide a good selection for you to make use of in your greenhouse and in your open sun vegetable gardens.

Tools, Materials and Supplies

First on our list of gardening resources is Gardens Alive. They offer a fine assortment of environmentally friendly products that address our needs in the area of vegetable gardening, but also address fruits, flowers, shrubs and lawns. It's a nice place for one stop shopping.

Next on our list is Gurney's. They have a comprehensive assortment of fruit and vegetable seeds and plants. If you can't find what you're looking for at Gurney's, then you're probably raising some very specific plants. For the average vegetable gardening need, Gurney's is bound to have what you want and need.

Another good supply of seeds and plants is Henry Fields. This is an old established nursery company that offers my readers a discount when they make a purchase of $30 or more. That's quite a savings.

Save $10 off your $30 order - the best seeds and nursery stock at HenryFields.com!

If you're looking to add some flowers, berries or vines to your greenhouse environment, Spring Hill Nursery is the place. In their vine section, they offer the Passion Flower. It's perhaps the most spectacular flowering plant you'll ever see. If you're into flowers as well as vegetables, this would be a nice addition to your garden.

Shop at SpringHillNursery.com to save $25 on a $50 order!

My objective is to provide a good listing of reputable providers of seed, seedlings, bare root trees and bushes, tools and equipment, and specialty supplies for your vegetable gardening interests.

References

The following gardening resources are books and other references that I think are top notch. They're written by individuals who know their subject matter and have lots of experience and insight to share. Enjoy these gardening resources as they will serve as excellent references throughout your growing season.

Greenhouse Gardener's Companion by Shane Smith
If you only have one book on greenhouse gardening, it should be Greenhouse Gardener's Companion by Shane Smith. It's truly a comprehensive and indispensable book about planning, operating and growing plants in a greenhouse or other covered growing space.

Shane Smith is in charge of the Cheyenne Botanical Gardens, so he knows full well what he's talking about. The book is informative and entertaining, and serves as a good read as well as an excellent reference for both the beginner and expert.

Vegetable Gardener's Bible by Ed Smith

Much the same can be said for Ed Smith's Vegetable Gardener's Bible. If you only have one book about growing vegetables, this would be the one. It is as comprehensive as it is detailed.

Ed grows mostly in outdoor gardens, but does some winter gardening in a small greenhouse. Whether you're new to vegetable gardening or an old pro, there is something to be learned from Ed's valuable book.

Four Season Harvest by Eliot Coleman

The guru of winter vegetable gardening is Eliot Coleman who has pioneered a nice set of techniques for growing vegetables most of the year and harvesting many of the cold weather hardy varieties during the winter months. A resident of Maine, he has plenty of experience with cold weather, so he becomes a valuable gardening resource for those of us who are looking to harvest year round. His book is called Four-Season Harvest, and it's an apt description.

This book not only tells you how to do it, but it gives you a bit of the science behind why it works. There is no sense just doing something if you can understand why you're doing it as well. Understanding the why behind it will help you be more successful.

One of your best gardening resources is knowledge. The next best gardening resource is your own experience. While you're building your own knowledge and experience base, I suggest you learn from the experts who have written the fine books shown above.
